RARE EARLY WOODEN STAVED BARREL CANTEEN

Here is an unbelievable Civil War period wooden staved barrel canteen originally found in Lancaster Pennsylvania. In my experience, this is a piece that you don't often find.

Measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/2",it was constructed like a wooden barrel, fit together with precision and held with early iron bands. As an extention of one of the staves you will find a piece that, through a hole likely fit a leather strap for hanging. That too would allow the canteen to be worn across the body when in use in the field.

In addition, there is a pencil decoration (as shown) on one side reminecent of those found on a Pennsylvania Dutch barn or perhaps a quilters star. There is a squarish cut-out "filler" hole on the opposite side, which may or may not have had a stopper.

Another great primitive find! Ca.1800's.($295)
